About This Trauma-Informed Resource: The Hurt Behind Throwing Stones *The Hurt Behind Throwing Stones* is a trauma-informed resource designed to help children and caring adults explore the feelings, experiences, and unmet needs that may exist beneath hurtful behaviours. Grounded in compassion, emotional safety, and connection, this resource encourages us to look beyond what we see and consider what a child may be communicating through their actions. Children may express distress in different ways. Sometimes, pain, fear, grief, disconnection, or overwhelming emotions can show up as anger, unkind words, exclusion, or behaviours that hurt others. Rather than responding with shame or labels, this resource invites adults to approach children with curiosity, recognize individual needs, and create opportunities for emotional awareness, co-regulation, and learning. A trauma-informed approach recognizes that **behaviour is communication, but it does not tell us the whole story.** We cannot assume what a child has experienced or why they behave in a particular way. Instead, we can offer safety, predictability, choice, and supportive relationships while helping children understand the impact of their actions. This resource holds compassion and accountability together. Understanding the hurt that may be beneath a behaviour does not excuse harm or diminish the experience of the child who has been hurt. Every child deserves to feel safe, and adults are responsible for intervening, setting clear boundaries, addressing harmful behaviour, and supporting repair when it is safe and appropriate. Through reflection, discussion, and restorative practices, *The Hurt Behind Throwing Stones* supports adults and children in building emotional literacy, empathy, self-awareness, and safer ways to navigate difficult feelings and relationships. At its heart, this resource reminds us that children do not need shame to learn. They need safe relationships, caring guidance, meaningful boundaries, and opportunities to practise new ways of responding. **When we respond to hurt with compassion and accountability, we create space for safety, understanding, healing, and change.**
